



2003 GRANT RECIPIENTS
Darrington Family Support and Resource Center—Darrington, WA $10,000
Grant to fund the Parent Support and Education Initiative, which provides parent-child classes, a parent support group, and basic assistance to families in need. This is a renewal of last year’s grant from CTF. Darrington is an isolated community with a population of about 1,042 with the greater Darrington area at about 3,500. The town is rural, located at the Cascade Mountains about 50 miles from Everett, and struggles with major economic issues including 50% unemployment. This has become an increasingly trusted service provider in the area.
Meridian School District Center for Children
and Families—Bellingham, WA $10,000
To establish a Family Night Out program uses an established model curriculum to help families develop communication skills, solve problems together, identify existing family strengths (such as problem solving skills, creative communication, listening skills, and patience) and increase their satisfaction at being together.
Family Support Center—Olympia, WA $5,000
This grant is to sustain the Kinship Care Support program which is primarily for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. The program offers an adult support group, on-site child care services, a therapeutic children’s program and intergenerational family activities.
Puyallup Family Support Center—Puyallup, WA $5,701
To help fund three free parenting classes: 1) The Nurturing Program, for parents of children ages birth to eight years, 2) The Love ‘n’ Logic program for parents of elementary school age children, and 3) Raising Teens and Preteens speaker series.
San Juan Island Family Resource Center—San Juan Island, WA $12,000
For continuation and expansion of the Parent-Infant Support Group and to fund the rapidly growing need for other family support services on the island, including home visits and group activities.
St. Anne’s Children & Family Center—Spokane, WA $10,000
In support of the Catholic Charities Childbirth and Parenting Alone (CAPA) Doula Project. The project will recruit and train community volunteers, women who are at least 26 years old with actual parenting experience, to provide long-term mentoring and support for young, single mothers. (Doula is the Greek word for a woman who assists and supports another woman. A Doula “mothers the mother.”)
St. James Family Center—Cathlamet, WA $5,000
To support the Center’s Family Support Services program, designed to improve parent-child relationships for families with children ages 0-5. Saint James Family Center is the only not-for profit social service organization in rural Wahkiakum County offering family support services, such as home visits, parent-education classes, children’s playgroups, and temporary crisis childcare.
Stanwood-Camano Community
Resource Center—Snohomish County, WA $10,000
To establish the Partners Project, a structured, interactive time when parents and children can work side by side on specific projects, with the guidance of a relationship building coach to establish a healthier family environment. The project is in response to the wish-lists of parents in the Center’s Parent-EASE and Developing Capable Young People programs.
