



2002 GRANT RECIPIENTS
Darrington Family Support and Resource Center—Darrington, WA $15,000
Parent Support and Education Initiative. The Darrington Center was launched in 1993 to help children, parents, and families in this impoverished rural community in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. The Parent Support and Education Initiative will consist of three components: parent-child workshops, parent support groups, and a basic assistance program to provide food, clothing, shelter, school supplies to families in crisis situations.
Familias Unidas Latino Resource Center—Everett, WA $15,000
To fund its Jugar es Aprender (“Playing is Learning”) program. Snohomish County’s only family support center dedicated to serving the Latino community, Familias Unidas has helped over 1,000 families and individuals since it opened its doors in April 2000. The Jugar es Aprender program will include three tiers of involvement for area Latino families: two 10-week parenting classes, a home-visiting program for high-risk families, and three community-building outings.
St. James Family Center—Cathlamet, WA $15,000
For its core family support services. St. James Family Center is the only family center in Wahkiakum County. The center offers parent education classes, parent support groups, home visitation, crisis childcare, and programs for pregnant and parenting teens. St. James will use CTF funds to maintain its highly successful parent support groups and home visitation program.
West Hill Family Enrichment Center—Renton, WA $12,000
To support it’s Parenting for Success Project. Part of the Renton Area Youth and Family Services, the West Hill Family Enrichment Center serves parents and families in South King County. The center will use CTF funds to deliver 6 additional Parenting for Success violence prevention and parent education workshops in 2002. These popular and effective 8-week workshops are held in schools, community centers, and churches in South King County. Each session includes free meals for participating families and free childcare.
Meridian School District Center for Children and Families — Bellingham, WA $10,000
Award to fund services supporting families of children ages 3-8. The newly established Meridian Center will serve parents and families in rural Whatcom County. It was founded to help rural families facing economic, language, or cultural barriers prepare for public school. CTF funds will support the center’s parent education and home visitation program and fund its monthly community-building family fun nights.
Southeast Family Center—Seattle, WA $4,930
Awarded to fund social skills classes for children. One of the first family centers in Seattle, the Atlantic St. Center’s Southeast Family Center serves families in Seattle’s Beacon Hill neighborhood. The Family Center will use CTF funds to establish a children’s counterpart to parenting classes already being offered. This experimental program will include a curriculum that compliments and reinforces the parents’ curriculum. Areas of focus will include reducing impulsive and aggressive behavior, social and emotional skills, problem solving, and conflict resolution.
