



1999 GRANT RECIPIENTS
Darrington Family Support and Resource Center—Darrington, WA $7,500
CTF funded the center’s Parent Support Group. Parents meet weekly in an informal meeting place, with well-supervised child care, and a warm, non-judging atmosphere where parents can talk openly with each other about parenting issues such as how to handle temper tantrums and how to communicate more positively with their children. A facilitator guides this structured parent education series around the format of “Getting to know your child better. Parents are assisted in strengthening understanding of thieir child’s development.
Key Peninsula Family Resource Center—Key Peninsula, WA $12,500
On Pierce County’s Key Peninsulla CTF funding supports the “WeePlay Program” which provides a safe, accepting place for parents to bring their children to play, while at the same time forging connections among parents who live scattered in solated homes throughout the areas. The facilitator gently guids the group encouraging parents to share ideas and setting an example of how to positively engage young children in play and growth.
Nooksack Valley Center for Children and Families—Nooksack, WA $10,000
This center is located near the Canadian boarder and CTF’s funding assists with the “Raising a Reader” program which encourages the use of reading to strengthen the child parent bond while developing a love of reading and learning. A mother who has a toddler in the Raising a Reader program said that she sees a distinct difference between this younger child and her older son who did not have the program and is now struggling in first grade. She feels this program has prepared her son for Headstart and that he is “ready to go."
